Transport SMEs Are Facing a Perfect Storm. Strong Cashflow Has Never Been More Important

The UK transport and haulage sector is no stranger to volatility. Margins have always been tight, fuel prices unpredictable, and payment terms frustratingly long. But for many operators, the challenges facing the industry in 2026 are creating pressures that go well beyond day-to-day trading.

From rising operating costs and continued supply chain disruption, to ongoing insolvencies across the haulage sector, transport businesses are being forced to navigate an increasingly complex landscape. For many SMEs, profitability is no longer the biggest concern – cashflow is.

Rising Costs Continue to Squeeze Operators

Recent geopolitical tensions have reignited concerns around fuel costs, with disruption to global energy markets feeding directly into transport operating expenses. At the same time, delays across international supply chains and continued uncertainty around cross-border freight movements are making planning and forecasting more difficult.

The UK haulage sector has seen significant consolidation in recent years, with over 2,000 transport businesses entering insolvency between 2021 and 2025. Many operators remain financially vulnerable, particularly smaller firms that lack the working capital reserves needed to absorb unexpected shocks.

For transport SMEs, the reality is often the same: costs must be paid today, while customers may not settle invoices for 60, 90 or even 120 days.

The Transport Sector is least likely to plan ahead

eCapital recently commissioned a survey amongst UK SMEs and the research revealed interesting insights within the Transport sector.  Compared with the sectors researched, Transport is the sector least likely to say it plans ahead with strong control and visibility of its cashflow, with just 37.9% saying they plan ahead compared with 49.8% of all businesses.  However, it is the sector most likely to say cashflow has already prevented it pursuing growth opportunities (43%), and almost two in five (39.2%) say they often accept unfavourable payment terms to secure new business.

Taken together, these findings suggest businesses in the sector are often operating with less financial flexibility than many others, making it harder to plan ahead or respond to new opportunities as they arise.

The Industry’s Biggest Challenge Is Often Hidden in Plain Sight

While discussions around fuel, labour and regulation dominate industry headlines, one of the largest threats to growth often sits on the balance sheet.

The transport sector operates with a fundamental cashflow mismatch.

Drivers, subcontractors, fuel suppliers and maintenance providers all require payment within relatively short timeframes. Yet many logistics firms and major customers operate extended payment terms, leaving hauliers funding the gap themselves.

As businesses grow, that problem frequently becomes more acute.

Winning a large contract should be positive news. But fulfilling that work often requires additional vehicles, subcontractor support and upfront expenditure long before the corresponding invoice is paid.

Without access to working capital, growth can place just as much strain on a business as a downturn.

Why More Transport Businesses Are Turning to Invoice Finance

Invoice finance provides transport businesses with access to cash tied up in unpaid invoices, allowing them to unlock working capital as soon as invoices are raised rather than waiting weeks or months for payment.

For businesses operating within an industry that depends on speed and reliability, having immediate access to cash can significantly improve resilience and create opportunities for growth.

It enables operators to pay drivers and subcontractors on time, take on larger contracts with confidence and maintain service levels even when customer payment terms remain lengthy.

Importantly, it can also provide a valuable buffer during periods of economic uncertainty.

When costs rise unexpectedly or supply chain disruption affects trading conditions, businesses with stronger cashflow are often better positioned to adapt and continue investing in growth.

A Real-World Example of Cashflow Supporting Growth

The experience of Silverback Transport demonstrates the impact that effective cashflow management can have on a growing haulage business.

Founded in 2021, the Glasgow-based logistics company quickly established itself servicing major logistics providers and supermarket supply chains. However, like many transport businesses, it was faced with a challenge familiar across the sector: customers operating on lengthy payment terms while subcontractors required faster payment.

To support growth, Silverback partnered with eCapital and accessed a flexible invoice finance facility that unlocked funding against invoices as soon as they were raised.

According to Director Conner Regan: “We wouldn’t have been able to start the business and get it going if we didn’t have a flexible funding solution in place.”

The impact has been significant. While the business originally forecast turnover of £325,000 in its first year, it has since grown to approximately £1.2 million per annum.

Regan attributes much of that growth to having reliable access to working capital: “Having available cashflow allowed us to scale with confidence.”

His comments reflect a challenge faced by many transport operators today. The issue is rarely a lack of demand. More often, it is whether a business has sufficient cash available to fund growth before customers pay.

As Regan puts it: “For businesses with funds tied up in unpaid invoices, this kind of facility isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

Looking Ahead

The transport sector has always been resilient, but the pressures facing operators are becoming increasingly complex.

Higher costs, economic uncertainty and longer payment cycles are likely to remain features of the market for the foreseeable future. While no funding solution can eliminate these challenges entirely, ensuring strong cashflow can provide businesses with greater flexibility to respond.

For transport SMEs looking to protect margins, support growth and navigate an uncertain trading environment, improving access to working capital may be one of the most effective steps they can take.

After all, in a sector where vehicles, drivers and customers keep moving, cashflow needs to move just as quickly.
